Lip Sync

Lip sync is a performance in which a person silently mouths the words to a pre-recorded song, using facial expression, movement, costume, and timing to embody the track rather than sing it live. In queer culture it is a core drag art form with deep roots in gay bars, pageants, and cabaret long before television. RuPaul's Drag Race brought it to a mass audience through its 'lip sync for your life' elimination battles, where two queens compete to stay in the show. A strong lip sync can include costume reveals, death drops, and crowd interaction, turning mimicry into storytelling that carries humor, grief, and joy.
