Lust

Intense sexual desire, a dimension of erotic life that queer cultures have often affirmed as human rather than shameful.

Lust is strong sexual desire or appetite, a normal part of erotic life. Within LGBTQ+ history the affirmation of lust has carried extra weight, because queer desire was long criminalized, pathologized, and shamed. Writers and movements from Walt Whitman's frank celebration of the body to the sex-positive politics of the 1970s insisted that desire between people of the same gender is human, not sinful or sick. Claiming lust openly became one way queer communities pushed back against that shame. The word still carries a moral charge in everyday use, where it can mean desire divorced from love or commitment, but in queer contexts it is often reclaimed as a healthy and honest part of being alive.
