Pauli Murray Family Home

The Durham, North Carolina childhood home of civil rights pioneer and Episcopal priest Pauli Murray, now a National Historic Landmark.

The Pauli Murray Family Home at 906 Carroll Street in Durham, North Carolina was the childhood home of Pauli Murray (1910-1985) and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016. Murray was a civil rights lawyer, activist, writer, and the first African American person perceived as a woman to be ordained an Episcopal priest. Murray struggled with gender identity in ways that many read today through a transgender or nonbinary lens. Murray's legal thinking helped shape the strategy behind Brown v. Board of Education and later informed Ruth Bader Ginsburg's arguments for gender equality. The home is now a center for history and social justice that honors one of the twentieth century's most influential yet long-overlooked figures.
