Scene, The

"The scene" is a broad term for the social and nightlife world of LGBTQ+ life in a given city or era: bars, clubs, parties, events, bathhouses, and the wider web of gathering places where queer people meet. In cities like New York, London, and San Francisco, the scene has long been a lifeline that offers community, connection, and belonging in the face of hostility or isolation. Depending on context, the phrase can also point to a specific subculture within that world, such as the leather scene, the kink scene, or the ballroom scene. People sometimes speak of being "on the scene" or stepping away from it, language that shows how central nightlife has been to building queer culture and chosen family.
