In an LGBTQ+ context, travel refers to the added planning around safety, laws, and acceptance that queer people navigate when visiting or moving to new places.
For LGBTQ+ people, travel carries considerations that many others never think about. Laws and public attitudes toward queer and trans people vary widely between countries and even within them, so a destination that is welcoming to some travelers may be unsafe or even criminalized for others. This shapes decisions about where to go, whether to show affection in public, and where to find affirming hotels, venues, and communities. Organizations such as the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association, along with guides, maps, and apps, help travelers research destinations, plan around risks, and connect with local communities. Travel has also long been part of queer life as a way to reach more accepting cities or relocate toward greater freedom and belonging.
