United States v. Skrmetti

United States v. Skrmetti (2025) is a U.S. Supreme Court decision on state limits on gender-affirming care for youth. Tennessee's law (SB1) bans doctors from prescribing puberty blockers or hormones to minors for the purpose of treating gender dysphoria or living as a gender different from their birth sex. In a 6 to 3 ruling, the Court held that the law does not discriminate based on sex or transgender status, so it is judged only under "rational basis" review, the most lenient legal standard, and it survived. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion; Justice Sonia Sotomayor dissented, calling it a failure to protect transgender youth. The decision clears the way for the many states with similar bans to enforce them, reshaping access to this care nationwide.
