Walt Whitman House

The Walt Whitman House at 328 Mickle Street in Camden, New Jersey, is the modest home the American poet purchased in 1884 and lived in until his death in 1892. There he revised his landmark collection Leaves of Grass. Now a state-run historic site and a National Historic Landmark, it carries meaning for LGBTQ+ history because Whitman is widely read as a foundational queer literary figure. His 'Calamus' poems and other work openly celebrated love and physical intimacy between men at a time when such expression was rare. Many readers regard him as an ancestor of queer American poetry. The site is undergoing restoration and is expected to reopen in 2027.
