Cis

Cis is the everyday shorthand for cisgender, describing a person whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth. Someone assigned female at birth who identifies as a woman is cis, as is someone assigned male who identifies as a man. The prefix comes from Latin cis-, meaning "on this side of," and pairs as an opposite to trans-, meaning "across" or "on the other side of." The word exists so that being non-transgender has a neutral name rather than being treated as the unspoken default. Being cis is simply one way of relating to gender, not a more natural or valid one. The short form is common in both casual conversation and academic writing.
