Equal Rights

Equal rights, in LGBTQ+ advocacy, refers to the ongoing effort to secure for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people the same legal standing and everyday freedoms that others already enjoy. It spans marriage, employment, housing, healthcare, education, parenting, and protection from violence and discrimination. The movement has won major victories, including nationwide marriage equality in Obergefell v. Hodges (2015) and workplace protections in Bostock v. Clayton County (2020). Significant gaps remain, particularly for transgender and nonbinary people, who continue to face discrimination in healthcare, public accommodations, and identity documents.
