Gender Expansive

Gender expansive is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity or expression stretches beyond the traditional expectations of man or woman. The Human Rights Campaign describes it as conveying a wider, more flexible range of gender identity or expression than typically associated with the binary gender system. The phrase is used often for children and youth who express gender in nonconforming ways, because it is affirming and does not pathologize them. It can also serve as a broad label covering non-binary, genderqueer, and gender-nonconforming people. Rather than naming one fixed identity, gender expansive signals openness to gender being experienced and expressed in many ways.
