Serve
To serve is to present a look, performance, or attitude with striking flair, confidence, and skill.
Serve is a term from Black and Latino LGBTQ+ ballroom culture in New York City, where competitors are judged on how completely they deliver a category on the runway. To serve a look, a face, or a performance is to bring full confidence and polish and give the audience exactly what the moment calls for, with style to spare. You will hear it in phrases like serving face, serving body, or just serving. The word traveled from the ballroom scene into wider queer slang and then into mainstream pop culture, helped along by shows like RuPaul's Drag Race. Like many ballroom terms, it carries a history rooted in the creativity and chosen family of the communities that built the scene.
