Grindr Tribes

Grindr Tribes are optional profile tags that let users place themselves within recognized gay subcultures, including Bear, Twink, Otter, Jock, Geek, Leather, Daddy, Discreet, and others. They act as shorthand for a person's look, community, or interests and can be used to filter or find like-minded users. Tribes reflect long-standing categories in gay male culture that predate the app. The system has been criticized for reinforcing narrow body-type and racial preferences. In 2020, as part of its response to the Black Lives Matter movement, Grindr removed its separate ethnicity filter, though the Tribes feature itself remains part of the app.
