"It's giving" is a slang phrase used to name the mood or impression something projects, as in "it's giving old Hollywood" or "it's giving chaos." It comes from African American Vernacular English and the Black and Latino LGBTQ+ ballroom scene, where sharp read on someone's look and energy has always been part of the culture. The expression moved into wider use through Black queer communities and then TikTok, becoming a common Gen Z way to describe a feeling without spelling it out. Left on its own, "it's giving" can also work as a punchline, implying that something is trying hard and not quite landing.
