M2F

M2F (also MTF) is an older abbreviation for 'male-to-female,' describing a transgender woman assigned male at birth who identifies and lives as a woman.

M2F, also written MTF or MtF, stands for 'male-to-female.' It describes a transgender woman, a person assigned male at birth who identifies and lives as a woman, and may take social, legal, or medical steps to affirm that identity. The term was once standard in clinical and community settings and still appears in some healthcare contexts. Today many prefer 'transgender woman' or 'trans woman,' language that centers who a person is rather than framing them by their assigned sex or a starting point. Some longtime community members still use M2F for themselves. When referring to others, follow the individual's own preferred wording, since the affirming choice is always the person's own.
