Trans Woman

A trans woman is someone who was assigned male at birth but identifies and lives as a woman.

A trans woman is a person who was assigned male at birth and whose gender identity is that of a woman. Some trans women pursue gender-affirming steps such as social transition, hormone therapy with estrogen, and various surgeries, but these are personal choices and not requirements of being a trans woman. Being trans is about identity, not any particular medical step. Trans women are women, a position affirmed by major medical, psychological, and human rights organizations. Trans women, and especially trans women of color, face high rates of discrimination and violence, which is part of why visibility and advocacy matter. GLAAD advises using transgender as an adjective, so trans woman or transgender woman.
