Non Binary / Nonbinary / Non-Binary

Non-binary is an umbrella term for gender identities that fall outside the strict categories of man or woman.

Non-binary (also written nonbinary or non binary) is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity sits outside the binary of exclusively man or woman. A non-binary person may feel like both, neither, somewhere in between, or a gender wholly separate from that binary, and identities such as genderqueer, genderfluid, and agender often fall under it. Non-binary people may or may not also identify as transgender, since many describe a gender different from the one assigned at birth. Pronouns vary widely and can include they/them, neopronouns, or she/he, so the respectful approach is simply to ask. Gender diversity beyond the binary appears across many cultures and eras, and legal and medical recognition of non-binary people continues to grow even as they still face discrimination.
