Pronouns

Pronouns are the words, such as she/her, he/him, or they/them, used to refer to a person in place of their name.

Pronouns are the words used to refer to a person in place of their name, such as she/her/hers, he/him/his, they/them/theirs, and others. Using a person's correct pronouns is a basic form of respect and recognition. For transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people, being referred to correctly is an important part of gender affirmation, and research links repeated misgendering to worse mental health outcomes, while the use of chosen names and pronouns is associated with lower rates of depression and suicidal thoughts among transgender youth. Sharing pronouns in introductions, name tags, and email signatures has become common in schools, workplaces, and communities as a straightforward way to signal inclusion.
