Misgendering

Misgendering means identifying a person's gender incorrectly, for example by using the wrong pronouns, an old name, or gendered words like sir, ma'am, ladies, or sister that do not match how someone identifies. It can happen by accident, especially early in someone's transition, or it can be done deliberately. Deliberate, repeated misgendering is widely recognized as a form of harassment. Research links being misgendered to real harm for transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people, including higher rates of stress, anxiety, and depression. The respectful response is simple: use the person's correct name and pronouns, and if you slip, correct yourself briefly and move on rather than making it a bigger moment.
