Transition

Transition is the process through which a transgender or nonbinary person brings their life and presentation into line with their gender identity.

Transition is the process a transgender or nonbinary person may go through to live in alignment with their gender identity. It can be social, medical, legal, or any combination. Social transition can include using a new name and pronouns, changing clothing or grooming, and coming out to family, friends, and coworkers. Medical transition can involve hormone therapy and, for some people, surgery. Legal transition means updating documents such as a driver's license, passport, or birth certificate. Every transition is personal, and there is no required set of steps. A person does not have to take any particular action, medical or otherwise, to be transgender or to have their gender respected.
