Outsider
A term describing the experience of standing apart from mainstream or heteronormative society, which many LGBTQ+ people have reclaimed as a source of insight and solidarity.
"Outsider" describes the feeling of being positioned outside mainstream culture, whether that means heteronormative society, dominant institutions, or at times even one's own community. For many LGBTQ+ people the outsider experience begins early and can be painful, tied to exclusion or not belonging. Queer culture and queer theory have long read the outsider position as more than a wound: it can be a vantage point that offers critical perspective, creative freedom, and kinship with other marginalized groups. Many LGBTQ+ artists, writers, and thinkers have claimed outsider status deliberately, turning distance from the center into a source of clarity and connection.
