Sex-Shame

Sex-shame is the feeling of guilt, embarrassment, or unworthiness attached to one's sexual desires, behaviors, or body.

Sex-shame, also called sexual shame, describes feelings of guilt, embarrassment, or being fundamentally bad tied to one's sexual desires, behaviors, or body. It usually grows out of cultural, religious, or family messages that frame sex as dirty or wrong. LGBTQ+ people can carry a heavier load, since they may absorb both general sex-negativity and specific stigma around same-sex attraction or gender nonconformity. Researchers have linked sexual shame to minority stress and to poorer mental and sexual health outcomes. Sex-positive and affirming therapy works to unwind that shame by treating sexuality as a normal, healthy part of life and giving people a nonjudgmental space to explore it.
