Sie / Hir

Sie and hir are a set of neopronouns, meaning newer pronouns coined as gender-neutral alternatives to he/him and she/her. In this set, "sie" is the subject form and "hir" covers the object and possessive forms, as in "sie went home" and "that book is hirs." Pronunciations vary, but common ones are "see" for sie and "here" for hir. The forms are related to the ze/hir set and draw loosely on German pronouns. Like all pronoun choices, they signal how a person understands their own gender. Using the pronouns someone has told you they use is a basic act of respect, and it is fine to ask politely if you are unsure.
