Social Identities
Social identities are the group categories such as race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, and religion that shape a person's experience and their access to power and resources.
Social identities are the categories society uses to group people, including race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, religion, and nationality. They shape everyday experience and influence who holds power and who can reach resources. In LGBTQ+ contexts, these identities rarely act alone. Intersectionality, a concept named by legal scholar Kimberle Crenshaw, describes how overlapping identities such as being Black, transgender, and low income combine to create experiences of both privilege and oppression that no single category captures on its own. Understanding social identities this way is central to LGBTQ+ advocacy, because it keeps the focus on real, layered lives rather than on one identity at a time.
