Top Surgery

Top surgery is a gender-affirming surgical procedure that alters the chest. For transmasculine and many nonbinary people it usually means removing breast tissue and contouring the chest, often through double-incision or periareolar techniques. For transfeminine people it can mean breast augmentation as part of a gender-affirming care plan. For many transgender and nonbinary people, top surgery eases gender dysphoria and improves quality of life and mental health, and it is among the most common gender-affirming surgeries. Access remains uneven, since insurance coverage, cost, and the availability of trained surgeons vary widely from place to place.
