Xe / Xem

Xe/xem is a set of gender-neutral neopronouns used by some people, often non-binary, as an alternative to she/her or he/him.

Xe/xem is a set of neopronouns, meaning newer pronouns coined outside the traditional he, she, and singular they. They are used by some people, often non-binary or gender non-conforming, who feel gendered pronouns do not fit them. A typical usage runs: xe went to the store, I called xem, that is xyr book, and the book is xyrs. Xe belongs to a family of similar sets built on xe, ze, or zie forms that circulated in LGBTQ+ communities and online. As with any pronoun, the respectful move is simply to use the ones a person tells you they use. If you are unsure, asking or mirroring what someone else uses is welcome.
