Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS)

Facial feminization surgery, usually shortened to FFS, is an umbrella term for surgical procedures that soften or reshape facial features often read as masculine into ones read as more feminine. Common areas of work include the forehead and brow ridge, nose, chin, jawline, and the Adam's apple. It is a form of gender-affirming care used by many transgender women and some nonbinary people. Feminizing hormone therapy can shift fat distribution in the face but cannot change bone structure, which is why surgery is often part of the picture. The exact procedures vary from person to person based on their features and priorities, and in many cases FFS is considered medically necessary treatment for gender dysphoria.
