Gay Panic

“Gay panic” has two very different meanings. In law, the gay panic defense is a strategy in which a defendant blames a violent act on discovering that the victim was gay, bisexual, or transgender, claiming they lost control. Courts, the American Bar Association, and LGBTQ+ advocates reject it, and many U.S. states have banned it. In everyday queer slang, “gay panic” is the giddy, flustered, or overwhelmed feeling of suddenly noticing someone attractive of the same gender. Used lightly and usually about oneself (“I had a full gay panic”), this sense is an affectionate, self-deprecating staple of online queer culture and has nothing to do with the legal defense.
