GLBT

GLBT is an initialism for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender. It came into use in the 1990s as activists moved from narrower terms like "gay" toward language that named more of the community. In its early years the gay rights movement often led with the G, producing the GLBT ordering seen in many organization names and publications of the era. Over time LGBT became the more common form, with the L placed first, a shift often linked to recognition of lesbians' support during the AIDS crisis. GLBT and LGBT refer to the same communities. Both continue to appear, though LGBT and its expansions such as LGBTQ and LGBTQ+ are now standard.
