Lingerie

Intimate apparel that, for many queer people, doubles as a tool for gender affirmation and self-expression.

Lingerie is intimate apparel, historically marketed to and for women, that carries added meaning in queer life. For many transgender and non-binary people, wearing it can be a form of gender affirmation and comfort in one's body. For drag performers, gay and bisexual men, and gender non-conforming people, lingerie challenges the assumption that clothing belongs to one gender. Queer lingerie culture tends to celebrate a wider range of bodies, sizes, and gender expressions than mainstream marketing, which has long centered thin, cisgender, heterosexual women. In that sense it is less about a fixed category of garment and more about who gets to feel desirable and seen.
