Phobia

In everyday clinical use, a phobia is an intense, irrational fear of something. In LGBTQ+ language, "-phobia" is attached to a prefix to name prejudice, discrimination, and hostility toward a group: homophobia toward gay people, transphobia toward transgender people, biphobia toward bisexual people, and acephobia toward asexual people. Some advocates criticize this usage, arguing that it frames bigotry as a fear or medical condition rather than a deliberate ethical and political choice, and can imply people are not responsible for their actions. Others keep the terms for their clarity and long history. The debate reflects an ongoing effort to find the most accurate language for describing anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination.
