Transphobia

Transphobia is negative attitudes, fear, hatred, or discrimination directed at transgender and gender-nonconforming people.

Transphobia refers to negative attitudes, feelings, or actions aimed at transgender and gender-nonconforming people, or at the idea of being trans. It shows up in many forms, from personal prejudice and slurs to violence, workplace and housing discrimination, denial of healthcare, and laws that strip away rights. Transphobia often overlaps with misogyny, especially against trans women, and with racism, which is why trans women of color face some of the highest rates of violence and poverty. Some advocates prefer the word transmisia, since the suffix meaning hatred describes the prejudice more accurately than a suffix meaning fear. Challenging transphobia is a central goal of LGBTQ+ rights and public health work.
