Pre-Op

Pre-op is short for pre-operative and describes a transgender person who has not undergone gender-affirming surgery but may be planning or seeking it. Like post-op, it is a clinical descriptor rather than an identity, and it is increasingly seen as outdated because it centers surgery as the defining marker of a trans life. Many transgender people never pursue surgery, whether by personal choice, cost, or access barriers, and their gender is fully valid regardless. A person's pre-op or post-op status says nothing about who they are. Asking about it in most social settings is considered intrusive, and the medical details of anyone's body are private.
