Socialization

Socialization is how people absorb the norms, values, and expected behaviors of their society, learning them from family, peers, schools, media, and other institutions. Much of this happens early and includes strong messages about gender and sexuality. Children often learn what is considered masculine or feminine, and are steered toward heterosexual expectations, long before they can question any of it. In LGBTQ+ and feminist discussion, socialization helps explain where internalized homophobia, transphobia, and gender policing come from, and why they can feel automatic. Seeing these patterns as learned rather than natural is what makes them possible to examine, challenge, and unlearn, both in individuals and in the wider culture.
