The Girls

"The girls" is an affectionate, playful slang phrase used in queer spaces to refer to a group of friends, most often gay men or trans women, regardless of anyone's literal gender.

"The girls" is a warm, playful piece of queer slang that people use to refer to their circle of friends or their community, often gay men, trans women, or a mixed queer crew. It carries the spirit of chosen family and inside-joke intimacy, borrowing the language of sisterhood as a term of endearment rather than a statement about gender. You might hear "the girls are coming over" or "how are the girls doing" among friends who feel at home with each other. The phrasing has roots in drag, ballroom, and gay social culture, where feminine-coded language has long been used affectionately and with humor. Within trans communities, "the girls" can also specifically mean trans women. Context and tone tell you which meaning is intended.
