They / Them / Theirs

They/them/theirs are gender-neutral pronouns used by many nonbinary and gender-diverse people, as well as anyone whose gender is unknown.

They/them/theirs are gender-neutral pronouns used by many nonbinary, genderqueer, agender, and gender-fluid people, and by some transgender people, to refer to themselves. The singular use of 'they' is not new. English speakers have used it for a person whose gender is unknown or unspecified for roughly 600 years, and major style guides now accept it for a specific individual too. Merriam-Webster named 'they' its Word of the Year in 2019 after lookups jumped 313 percent, and the American Psychological Association recommends singular 'they' in professional writing. Using someone's stated pronouns is a basic act of respect, and doing so is both grammatically sound and widely supported.
