Vanilla

Vanilla refers to sexual or romantic behavior seen as conventional or mainstream within a given culture, meaning it does not involve BDSM, kink, or fetish elements. The term comes mostly from kink and BDSM communities, where it works as a neutral descriptor for people or activities outside power-exchange and fetish play, drawing on vanilla as the plain, default ice cream flavor. It is not meant as an insult, though it can carry a mild contrast with kink-positive lifestyles depending on tone. Vanilla intimacy is no less valid or fulfilling than any other consensual form, and plenty of people describe their own preferences as vanilla without apology. Many people also move between vanilla and kink depending on partner and mood.
