Bottom Surgery

Bottom surgery is an informal umbrella term for gender-affirming genital surgeries, named in contrast to top surgery, which addresses the chest. For transfeminine people, procedures can include vaginoplasty, which creates a vaginal canal and vulva, or vulvoplasty, which creates external genitalia with a shallow or no canal. For transmasculine people, options include metoidioplasty and phalloplasty. These surgeries are performed by specialized teams and are covered by many insurance plans. They can be an important step for people who want them, though many trans people do not pursue bottom surgery. A person's gender identity is valid regardless of whether they have had any surgery.
