LGBTQIA+

LGBTQIA+ is one of the most expansive acronyms in common use. It stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual, and the plus sign covers identities the letters do not spell out. That includes people who are pansexual, demisexual, non-binary, Two-Spirit, agender, and more. The plus is a deliberate signal that identity is broad and still evolving rather than a fixed checklist. Longer acronyms like this one grew as advocates and institutions worked to make the language more inclusive. Because it can be unwieldy, many people still shorten it to LGBTQ or LGBTQ+ in casual use while meaning the same wide community.
