SOGIE
SOGIE stands for sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, a framework used in human rights and policy to protect people across the full range of these traits.
SOGIE stands for sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. It is used in legal, policy, and human rights settings to talk about the aspects of a person that are often the basis for discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, without requiring anyone to adopt a specific label. The framing is common in international work by bodies like the United Nations and the World Health Organization, which increasingly address SOGIE in health and rights guidance. An expanded version, SOGIESC, adds sex characteristics to explicitly include intersex people. Approaching protections through SOGIE covers homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and bias against anyone who does not conform to expected gender norms.
