Cissexism / Genderism

Cissexism, sometimes called genderism, is a belief system and pattern of discrimination that treats cisgender identity as legitimate while denying, excluding, or stigmatizing transgender and gender-nonconforming people. Closely related to the broader idea of cisgenderism, which holds that there are only two genders and that a person's gender should match their sex assigned at birth, it works through laws, medical practice, employment policy, and everyday social norms. Cissexism does not require personal hostility to cause harm, because it is built into systems that assume cisgender is the default. Research links this kind of gender-based discrimination to worse mental and physical health for trans and non-binary people. Confronting cissexism is a central part of transgender equality.
