Genderism / Cissexism

Genderism, often called cissexism or cisgenderism, is the ideology that there are only two genders, that a person's gender should match the sex assigned at birth, and that cisgender identities are more natural or legitimate than transgender and non-binary ones. Writer Julia Serano defines cissexism as the assumption that cis people's genders, expressions, and bodies are more valid than those of trans people. It works less through open hostility than through everyday assumptions built into laws, forms, language, and institutions that erase trans and non-binary people. It differs from transphobia, which usually names direct fear or prejudice. Naming and challenging genderism is a central goal of trans and non-binary advocacy.
