Legal Gender

Legal gender is the sex or gender designation that governments record on official documents like birth certificates, passports, and driver's licenses. For transgender, non-binary, and intersex people, the ability to correct that marker, known as legal gender recognition, shapes safety, healthcare access, employment, housing, and travel. Rules vary widely around the world. Some places let a person change their marker through a simple self-declaration, while others require medical evidence, surgery, sterilization, or court approval, and many still refuse to recognize non-binary options at all. The United Nations affirms that trans people have a right to have their gender identity legally recognized without abusive requirements. Legal gender recognition remains a central and contested issue in trans rights.
