Sapatrans is a term used mainly in Brazilian Portuguese-speaking LGBTQ+ communities to describe transgender lesbians. It combines "sapatão," a Brazilian slang word for lesbian that has been reclaimed as a badge of pride, with "trans." The word affirms that trans women can be lesbians and belong fully to lesbian community and culture, pushing back on the idea that lesbian identity is limited to cisgender women. Sapatrans reflects the layered gender and sexual identities present in Latin American queer life, where local vocabulary carries its own history and cultural weight rather than simply mirroring English-language terms.
